Webinar Series on AI for Healthcare Unions and Union Leaders

Announcing

Webinar #2

Wednesday, January 14, 2026, 4:00 pm – 5:30 pm EST

How AI is Impacting Nurses, Doctors, and Techs
and What Unions are Doing to Prepare

This webinar is the second of three webinars organized by The Penn State Learning Collaborative on Artificial Intelligence (AI) for Unions, Union Leaders, and Activists.

Although many researchers and AI companies claim that AI can enhance patient care by improving diagnoses, personalizing care plans, increasing the accuracy of recordkeeping, and streamlining administrative processes, most often AI is being used to cut jobs and save money.  To ensure AI is being used to reduce burnout and moral injury and improve patient care,  unions need a voice in its development and implementation.

Our three-part Webinar Series will help union leaders and activists:

·        Better understand the various AI tools that are being implemented in healthcare workplaces.

·        Learn how healthcare unions can use their power to make sure AI tools are used to create a healthier workplace for staff.

·        Become aware of how unions which represent healthcare workers are using their power to make sure AI benefits patients and healthcare workers and how other unions are dealing with AI issues.

All Healthcare Union Leaders and Activists are Welcome

The Focus of Webinar #2

Participants in Webinar #1 were asked to identify the aspects or issues related to AI they most want to learn more about.  The most common response was to learn how AI is impacting the various healthcare occupations at present, and how it might potentially impact them in the future.  In this webinar, speakers will discuss specific examples of AI adversely impacting the work of nurses, doctors, and techs, and what unions are doing to prepare for these technologies.

Featured Speakers

Tamara Lefcowitz is the Coordinator of the United Steelworkers Health Care Workers Council representing more than 50,000 health care workers across the US and Canada.

Silas Russell is the Executive Vice President, Director of Policy and Research, SEIU Healthcare Pennsylvania

Nirav R. Shah, MD, MPH, is Senior Scholar at Stanford University’s School of Medicine, with expertise that spans digital transformation of health systems.
