Thanks for sending this Joe,
Many years ago, as an undergraduate labor studies student I became a member of Worker Education Local  189, AFT, due to the influence of mentors who were active.
My view is that affiliation would be a positive step for UALE, and therefore support exploring this further.
Best,
Jerry

Let's bring back local 189--it was great for the overalls brigade.

Even though local189 no longer exists (though a reaffilitation of UALE to AFT could reinstate the historic local number) UALE could right now vote to affiliate with HELU and I would suggest that it do so.  higheredlabor.org

Amanda, Thanks for acknowledging that the UALE Board is following this.

I wonder if Ron Peters still reads this list. I saw a photo of him recently at an event in Chicago. I remember back when the merger between 189 and UCLEA was being discussed. I asked him what the problem was. He was against the merger.  He said that it would undermine the credibility of labor education as an academic discipline. How? By diluting the membership, the content of conferences, the kind of research that would get done, and so on. (If he reads this I hope he will correct me.)

It would be worth asking, what makes a discipline academic? Or, academic in whose eyes? Academic for what purpose? The famous for-whom, by-whom, for-what-purpose questions. And what did this have to do with the attacks on labor ed programs that were occuring in the 2010s? And today?

Or, in what world is the thoughtful evaluation of a steward training program NOT academic?

I don’t mean to clog up this list, but I’d love to hear my dear colleagues tear this one to shreds.

(If he reads this I hope he will correct me.) It would be worth asking, what makes a discipline academic? Or, academic in whose eyes? Academic for what purpose? The famous for-whom, by-whom, for-what-purpose questions. And what did this have to do with the attacks on labor ed programs that were occuring in the 2010s? And today? Or, in what world is the thoughtful evaluation of a steward training program NOT academic? I don’t mean to clog up this list, but I’d love to hear my dear colleagues tear this one to shreds. I  need to correct my error. the URL is <higheredlaborunited.org> and the newly officially founded national coalition devoted building and industry wide higher education labor movement “wall to wall and coast to coast” out of the 13 unions that represent higher education workers today. This is of course a separate question from UALE affiliating directly with a national union itself.

Very glad that this thread has raised some interest and action.
