Dear UALE and IFWEA friends:

Joe Berry and I have just spoken with our faculty contact at Ton Duc Thang University in Viet Nam, Hoang Thi Tuong Vinh, who is organizing a conference to be held January 4, 2024. The conference is a collaborative effort between the Law School and the Department of Labor Relations.  It is being held at the request of the Viet Nam General Confederation of Labor, the national labor union. The mandate from the union to the University was to “learn from other countries.” The conference is explicitly a way to gather research to inform how Viet Nam will implement changes in their labor law. Collective bargaining as an adversarial process is a relatively new element of their labor regime. (We’ll be happy to provide more deatils about this to anyone who is interested. We taught there three times pre-COVID.)

They are looking for paper submissions to this conference. The specific situation that they are most interested in hearing about is how collective bargaining is carried out in enterprises where workers are represented by more than one union — for example, where there might be three different unions in one business relating to one employer. They are interested in case studies from different sectors as well as from different countries.

This is a unique opportunity for UALE members to share experience and learn from the global labor movement.

The conference, which will be entirely in English, will be on line for overseas participants but in person at Ton Duc Thang in Ho Chi Minh City.  Here is the call:
