With sorrow, respect, and gratitude, the UALE Board honors the life and memory of our President Emeritus, Kent Wong. Kent understood the labor movement as one rooted in justice for all workers, regardless of their nationality, preferred language, or immigration status. He fought for a labor education practice that was always grounded in anti-racism and dignity for every worker, and his visionary leadership of the UCLA Labor Center inspired a generation of labor activists and educators alike.

In the year 2000, Workers Education Local #189 and UCLEA merged to form the United Association for Labor Education. UCLEA President Kent Wong from UCLA and WEL #189 President Charlie Micallef from the International Association of Machinists led a one-year planning process to facilitate this merger. Kent was elected first President of UALE, serving from 2000-2002, and also served on the Executive Committee of the International Federation of Worker Education Associations.

In April of this year, Kent welcomed new and returning UALE members to Los Angeles for the biennial conference. Kent’s careful planning helped shape an engaging conference agenda, and the reception he hosted downtown was special to everyone in attendance.

As we continue to build toward a labor movement that honors the rights and dignity of every worker, we hold Kent’s legacy in our hearts and in our deeds.  Our organization and our movement owe so much to the dedication and love Kent brought to everything he did.

Rest in Power, Kent Wong.

Kent was my dearest friend and comrade in the movement and we had wonderful
collaborations. You all know what he was like. A true friend and a loving
human being who also knew how to bring down the wrath on injustice. I can
hardly stand the thought of not having him in my life.

I wanted to forward two projects we worked on. I urge you to see the film
to see Kent speaking to us so clearly about nonviolence and labor
organizing. It helps  to bring him back to us. You can get it by typing in
the title of the film on Amazon Prime or Vimeo.

Also see the wonderful book we did together with James Lawson at the
University of California Press (2022).

We lost Jim last summer and now Kent, two wonderful friends and comrades.
Please use these documents to carry on their legacy.

Subject: [Ualeindiv] Kent Wong, Presente

With sorrow, respect, and gratitude, the UALE Board honors the life and
memory of our President Emeritus, Kent Wong. Kent understood the labor
movement as one rooted in justice for all workers, regardless of their
nationality, preferred language, or immigration status. He fought for a
labor education practice that was always grounded in anti-racism and dignity
for every worker, and his visionary leadership of the UCLA Labor Center
inspired a generation of labor activists and educators alike.

In the year 2000, Workers Education Local #189 and UCLEA merged to form the
United Association for Labor Education. UCLEA President Kent Wong from UCLA
and WEL #189 President Charlie Micallef from the International Association
of Machinists led a one-year planning process to facilitate this merger.
Kent was elected first President of UALE, serving from 2000-2002, and also
served on the Executive Committee of the International Federation of Worker
Education Associations.

In April of this year, Kent welcomed new and returning UALE members to Los
Angeles for the biennial conference. Kent's careful planning helped shape an
engaging conference agenda, and the reception he hosted downtown was special
to everyone in attendance.

As we continue to build toward a labor movement that honors the rights and
dignity of every worker, we hold Kent's legacy in our hearts and in our
deeds.  Our organization and our movement owe so much to the dedication and
love Kent brought to everything he did.

Rest in Power, Kent Wong.

I did not know Kent Wong personally but I always knew that he was there
doing his part for justice and labor education. A week rarely passed
without someone mentioning his name or his work. I rarely thought twice
about the content of those messages because I knew that whatever was
happening, I would support his decisions. That is how I felt for decades,
he was an institution for the common good. I can hardly believe the news.
We are all diminished without him.

I wanted to forward two projects we worked on. I urge you to see the film
to see Kent speaking to us so clearly about nonviolence and labor
organizing. It helps  to bring him back to us. You can get it by typing in

Also see the wonderful book we did together with James Lawson at the

We lost Jim last summer and now Kent, two wonderful friends and comrades.
Please use these documents to carry on their legacy.

Losing Kent is an awful blow. He was right there at the creation of so many important projects, as an inspiration and guide. Just the Vietnam exchange project, for example! He really understood how and what to organize.

I expect that there will be a memorial gathering.

Such a terrible loss. Kent was unfailingly kind and generous with his time.  The last time I talked with him was a couple of years ago when he walked me through the details of all the amazing new funding for labor ed in California as we were hoping from something more modest but still meaningful from the state of New Jersey. (Sadly, that did not happen.)  He was very helpful and supportive in that moment while also gently pushing us to be more ambitious.  I have other great memories from his leadership of UALE and seeing him at various IFWEA gatherings around the world.

Adrienne http://support.rutgers.edu/GiveSMLR Adrienne E. This is such sad news.  I thought of Kent as a real visionary, and one who was also kind and caring about his colleagues and others – an all-too-rare combination.  This is a big loss for all of us.

I did not know Kent Wong personally but I always knew that he was there doing his part for justice and labor education. A week rarely passed without someone mentioning his name or his work. I rarely thought twice about the content of those messages because I knew that whatever was happening, I would support his decisions. That is how I felt for decades, he was an institution for the common good. I can hardly believe the news. We are all diminished without him.

Also see the wonderful book we did together with James Lawson at the University of California Press (2022).

We lost Jim last summer and now Kent, two wonderful friends and comrades. Please use these documents to carry on their legacy.

Kent had an uncommonly rich and diverse set of attributes, with these adjectives coming to mind: charismatic, visionary, tenacious, generous, and unfailingly hopeful.  I am grateful to have known him and seen these qualities on display.

Kent was a truly rare human being who led an exemplary and consequential life.  His deep commitment to the field of labor education and his relentless efforts to defend and promote our work represent an especially notable part of his legacy.

May his memory be both a blessing and an inspiration.

Dear Colleagues:

As I sit here reflecting on what a wonderful colleague Kent was and think about the nice attributes everyone is sharing about him on his passing, It occurs to me that life is too short and precious to wait to express these thoughts.

So, let me take this somber occasion to express my gratitude to all of you who do the work of labor educators and help to provide working people with the tools to better empower themselves. Now more than ever you are needed. And I’m sure Kent would have felt similarly.

Best,
Bob

Kent had an uncommonly rich and diverse set of attributes, with these adjectives coming to mind: charismatic, visionary, tenacious, generous, and unfailingly hopeful.  I am grateful to have known him and seen these qualities on display.

Kent was a truly rare human being who led an exemplary and consequential life.  His deep commitment to the field of labor education and his relentless efforts to defend and promote our work represent an especially notable part of his legacy.

May his memory be both a blessing and an inspiration.

Dear Colleagues: As I sit here reflecting on what a wonderful colleague Kent was and think about the nice attributes everyone is sharing about him on his passing, It occurs to me that life is too short and precious to wait to express these thoughts. So, let me take this somber occasion to express my gratitude to all of you who do the work of labor educators and help to provide working people with the tools to better empower themselves. Now more than ever you are needed. And I’m sure Kent would have felt similarly.
