Position Announcement: Executive Director, Center for Worker Justice of Eastern Iowa

The Center for Worker Justice of Eastern Iowa is a dynamic, diverse workers' center based in Iowa City, Iowa with a track record of winning groundbreaking intersectional workers' rights and social justice campaigns. Our members are low-wage and immigrant workers, speaking nearly a dozen languages, who lead our organization with the support of a small team of staff and a strong network of labor and faith allies. Since our founding in 2012 we have led a series of successful campaigns to recover unpaid wages, defend the rights of immigrant community members, win the state's first local minimum wage increase, organize tenants for a voice with developers and landlords, and establish the first inclusive community ID program in the Midwest. And we're poised to do so much more!

We are seeking a full-time Executive Director to lead the overall operations of our organization, support the development of member leaders, and create a welcoming and inclusive environment. The Executive Director will work closely with the Board of Directors to build our membership, strengthen alliances, plan issue-based campaigns, coordinate meetings and direct actions, supervise staff, and oversee administrative and fundraising functions. Candidates must have several years of paid organizing and supervisory experience in grassroots community or labor organizations made up of diverse communities of workers. They must also demonstrate written and verbal fluency in English and one of the most common languages represented among CWJ's membership (Spanish, French, or Arabic).

  • Build immigrant and low-wage worker membership and leadership.

  • Meet with members to develop plans to address individual and community concerns.

  • Establish and maintain alliances with labor, faith, and community organizations.

  • Administer office, supervise completion of grant reports, and develop fundraising strategies.

  • Train and supervise staff, volunteers, and interns.

  • Lead communication with members, allies, and media.

Required Qualifications:

  • At least 3-5 years of paid experience as a labor or community organizer, coordinating grassroots campaigns involving diverse communities of workers and/or experience as a leader of a comparable organization.

  • Experience building or maintaining coalitions with labor, faith, or other grassroots community organizations.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English and one of three most common languages spoken by CWJ's current membership (Spanish, Arabic, or French).

  • Experience with grant reports and/or organizational budgeting.

  • Experience supervising employees and volunteers.

  • Must possess a valid U.S. Driver's License, vehicle in working order, auto insurance.

  • Must be able to work a flexible schedule, including evenings and weekends.

Desirable Qualifications:

  • Experience with computer programs related to office and organizational development (e.g., word processing, spreadsheet, membership databases).

  • Familiarity with workers' rights under U.S. labor and employment law.

Compensation and Benefits:

  • Starting salary of $80,000/year.

  • Employer contribution toward medical insurance coverage, retirement, and generous paid time off policies.
