Friends,

It is with great sadness that I pass on to those who may not have heard yet
that our dear labor educator, labor leader brother Kent Wong passed away
recently. Under his leadership, the UCLA Labor Center became a dynamic hub
of organizer training and liberatory education, of central importance to
the Los Angeles labor movement and immigrant and people of color
communities. He was a founder and first president of both the Asian Pacific
American Labor Alliance (APALA) and the United Association for Labor
Education (UALE). He wore his leadership mantle lightly - he was outgoing,
supportive and a good friend and mentor to many. I especially remember his
endless work on behalf of the Dreamers, including touring to our program
with a book of their testimonies he helped produce. This was exemplary work.

We West Coast labor educators and unionists worked closely with him, and
benefited greatly from this association. He will be missed.

Rest in peace and power, Brother Kent Wong - ¡Kent Wong, presente!

Bill

Affiliates & Delegates,

It is with great sadness that we share that longtime labor leader and
champion Kent Wong has passed away. Please see the Labor Council's
statement below.

Rest in Power, Kent!

The San Francisco Labor Council mourns the passing of Kent Wong, a
lifelong champion of working people, immigrants, and social justice. For
more than three decades as director of the UCLA Labor Center, Kent
dedicated his life to empowering workers, students, and communities across
California. His visionary leadership and commitment to equity helped shape
a generation of labor and community leaders who continue his fight for
justice today.

“Kent’s leadership, compassion, and unwavering belief in the power of
working people made a lasting mark on the labor movement,” said Kim
Tavaglione, Executive Director of the San Francisco Labor Council. “We will
honor his life by continuing the struggle for justice that he so
passionately advanced.”

The San Francisco Labor Council extends our deepest condolences to Kent’s
family, friends, and colleagues, and to the countless people whose lives he
touched through his dedication to dignity and justice for all.

The San Francisco Labor Council is an organization of 100 affiliate
unions, representing over 100,000 working men and women in San Francisco.
