Demanding Justice Then and Now:
Black Women’s Union Organizing and Intellectual Work
Rutgers SMLR - LEARN and Greater NJ CLUW present:
Saturday, March 7 at 10am – 1pm
Rutgers Labor Education Center, 50 Labor Center Way, New Brunswick
Virtual available for 10am-11am session ONLY
We are in a moment when Black women labor leaders and workers are being targeted by the federal government and Black women are just now being elected as presidents of their unions, after a four-century history in labor organizing.
Join us as we celebrate the work of Black women labor historians and union leaders’ organizing and intellectual work to transform the U.S. political economy. We will come together across labor organizations and academic disciplines to discuss Black women’s organizing across time and in multiple sites: unions, social organizations, scholarship, schools, and churches.
This half-day symposium makes a significant intervention in public discourse and academic study that often minimizes Black women’s work in labor movements. This erasure parallels disparities that are still in labor unions. The symposium also meets the current moment in which Black women labor leaders are drawing from history to call for a Third Reconstruction.
